Reflecting on 2011, I realize that the simplest, but most important things I value are truth and honesty. And to expect that from others, I need to find it within myself. So this year I intend to:
} remember my truth ~ trust it, without regret
} embrace my truth ~ even if it's sometimes ugly, it's mine
} follow through with my life, living out my truth
I guess you could say that Kelly Clarkson has my perfect theme song ;)

My truth is raw, different and not like anyone else ~ but that is what makes me... me.

I was fortunate enough to have taken a class from Thomas Mann at the Fine Line this August. Personal Found Object Sandwich. Here are a few of the finished samples of the class work. Excellent artist statements. My creation became gratefully more personal than I anticipated. A special thank you to Thomas, for insisting and helping me finish it. It was certainly destined to be another UFO (unfinished object) in my repertoire.

As usual I seemed to not bring the "right" elements. Of course I had cool old photos of my own not so familiar family and others of my daughter. But nothing seemed right. Then I came across these treasured photographs in my stash. Personal items, I've carried close for years; waiting for the right day. Well, it seemed the day arrived. I started sketching.
The story } The photo is of a dear friend of mine, that lost his fight to cancer 21 years ago this September. He never really liked his picture taken, but this crop tells more than his silly smirk might anyway. It might be hard to depict, but he is leaning over petting a goose. These pictures were taken on the same day at a local pond with my first 110 film camera.

So true, there are times I might need to look at a picture to remember his face. But I will never forget his gentleness.
I sometimes have to remind myself to extend the same gentleness to myself and others, especially when circumstances fall short of expectations.

Here's another shot, with the feathers I've collected over the years, seemingly to appear when I need encouragement the most... the tell-tale colors, blue, black and gray. Including the most recent one that appeared on my doorstep right after his Mom came to visit my new place. I'm grateful to have known the gentleness of my guardian angel. I feel good that this moment is captured in a piece of art, in a way it has been created to not only remember, but to let go...

online eye candy ~ vision boards as social media

I've always collected snippets from magazines, xerox pages from books, collected quotes, gathered postcards from artists I admire and put them away in a shoebox, pinned them up on my bulletin board or sometimes even organized them in a plentiflex. I would categorize them in decor, art, places I would like to go, a technique I would like to try… But very rarely would I look at them and when I did, I wish I had more info and remembered where I snagged it from... Now with the internet, I visit a ton of blogs and other websites, bookmark sites and create a reader and still barely get halfway through my list before going on a tagent and forgetting where I started. My short attention span meets the abundant influx of information... and I'm even more disorganized and disappointed when I can't retrieve the information I somewhat recollect.
Then my friend Denise introduced me to Pintrest. Social media meets vision boards. You can collect (pin) all your inspiration in one location, categorize your inspirations and interests on virtual boards, so your friends (or followers) can see them - or keep them private. Not just a picture or clip, but your comments and insight, and most importantly link back to the blog or website the idea came from.

If you don't want to pin, you can just peruse your home page for too see selected users and there thoughts and pins. It's true online eye candy with community behind all the info.
I have started several boards, but one I just had fun with was collecting ideas for my daughter's tea party last weekend.
Although I didn't do everything I wanted to, I was so less frazzled having a place to put AND retrieve my online inspirations. No need to search all over for that recipe, or craft how to. It was all there, with a simple pinning. Brillant!
You do have to have a social media account to start, such as twitter or facebook, but they don't have to be active, unless you want to share to them. You can easily get a twitter account and might not even tweet.
Love it also for sharing work of artists and designers. I started a public board for "art that inspires". I started the board out with an installation by Janet Echelman that has an interesting podcast on CraftCast this week. Let me know if you would like to contribute and I'll send you an invite.

Northwoods Art Tour, WI

A annual event ~ July 29th, 30th, 31st ~ The Northwoods Art Tour.
I'm so proud to be invited, once again, to show my work at
Debra Ketchum Jircik's Circle of Life Studio
So if you are in the Northwoods this weekend, please stop by : just 4 miles from Eagle River, travel south 3 miles on Hwy 45 to Evergreen Road. Left on Meta Lake Road, first right on Gaffney to 3720.
Some of the northwoods' finest artists and artist owned galleries are allowing visitors a inside look of how their work is created.
Besides taking in the works of artists ~ Carolyn Miller, Judi Maloney, Brad Davis, Debra and myself ~ take time to get lost in the gardens, walk the stone labyrinth or relax by the lake. Circle of Life Studio is truly a place to sit back relax, explore and take it all in.

I'll be there in person on Friday, talking about my art and practicing a bit of my craft. And my pieces will be in the gallery all weekend.
Here is a sneak preview of one of my newer creations that will be in the collection.

There are several galleries open, so make a day of it. Here is the link to all the galleries open. The Northwoods Art Tour features on-site artist demonstrations, original local art for sale, and access to many home studios that are rarely open to the public.

sweet tears

Off they go, ribbon and tagged with their story... waiting on sixteen charms in return...

Again, I was part of a charm swap with the EMC Team. So proud to be part of this talented group of artists. This charm was even more personal then the swaps ~ wise eyes and words.
The latest charm called "Perspective ~ Tears or Ice Cream" is inspired by my five year old muse.
~ the scenario: a fall day, a craft project with the little one, making paper hearts ~ after an emotionally revealing, unraveled week...
me {in my head} : strange how the paper hearts when folded are tears
little one {clutching her folded heart in her hand} "look Momma… it's an ice cream cone" as she pretends to take a lick.
So blessed to be reminded that it is truly all perspective. It's up to you to turn the teardrop into sweet ice cream.
Here's a bit about the process: Like in the previous swaps, I created the original and then made a mold of it. While each tear was in the mold, I created a tiny heart, each a little different, and tucked it snugly into the back

Then let them dry to a leather hard state and carve any access around each tear (cone ;) ~ I love the way bronze clay carves. Unfortunately I didn't make the mold before pouring the resin in the bezel of the original, so I had to carve out each one of the tear bezels individually. But it gave me the opportunity to carve a bit of a rough groove under the bezel. The thought was to fill the tear drop with Standard PMC Silver. Since they have similar shrinkage, I have had success with combining standard PMC and the bronze clay in the past, but I was not as lucky this time. After the test firing and tumble, only 1 out of the 3 trial pieces grasped the silver in the bezel.

So off to plan B ~ a familiar pattern in my work. All the bezels were carved out and fired with my standard bronzeclay schedule. Tumbled and prepared for the resin.

Since they were so little and the backside was not flat, I placed the charms on scotch tape in a butchers tray. This helped keep them put and level. I first painted a bit of light blue in the bezel, then, if you look closely, you'll see I added a bit of extra sentimentality.

For me the eggshell represents life, a new beginning after tears and a promise of good things to come.

~ was never very punctual, but if I said I'd be there, I would
~ loved time with family and friends

~ was always ready to plan an adventure
Now at 40, I'm realizing I never really outgrew any of it… it's Me.

creative outing and filter frenzy

Artist dates are the best. Especially with like a like-minded meander. Our final destination, the NaDa Farm for vintage/artistic eye candy. After we got lost at Cracker Jax for over an hour, taking in all the inspiration and goodness, there. What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night.

But when reviewing my photos from the adventure, I wanted my pictures to reflect a bit more vintage flair. As an artist and designer – I love my mac, but I don't have an iphone. I'm old school when it comes to phone technology. I'll blame it on commitment issues ;) but I love the photo filters and instant "art" created by the simplest iphone app. My pouting subsided when my friend, the lovely, talented Denise of ladybirddee shared a great link ~ an action set to help achieve the look of the iphone filter easily. Here are some results using one of my favorite pictures from the day.

repercussions...

Another challenge – yet a bit late, more the less, accepted and taken. The Etsy Metal Clay Team challenge was to set a stone in a piece after firing, with a visual inspiration. I have several cabochons and rocks waiting for a setting, an idea, that is worthy of their beauty. Worthy = beautiful.... why do I see those together?
The stone in this setting is a raw Padparadscha I bought a few years ago at the Bead and Button Show set in fine silver prongs. Similar designs have been in my mind and repertoire since the very beginning of my explorations of PMC, back in 2002, starting with one of my first original pieces

but since I prefer to create out of happiness, I’ve been a bit starved for inspiration... So this piece was almost never created or solidified. As the due date came closer, I came to realize, I would not have finished anything for this challenge, although, as usual, I started several ideas. All laying unfinished, not worthy on my workshop table.
But then this idea came clear Tuesday morning, after a poor nights sleep, combined with the reading of the heartbreaking stories of the people of Japan, after the Tsunami devastated their country last Friday. While watching the video of the churning water destroying a port in California, the effects this earthquake, hundreds of miles away. I thought of the repercussions of disasters in nature, and the repercussions of the actions in life.
You can’t stop the momentum - you just have to persevere with the flow. I have had a lot of tragedy not happen to me, as much as around me. Which sometimes makes me feel guilty for my fears, anger, unhappiness and sadness. But I have to remember “we all suffer, unequally” and just because your heart break is less severe - yes, you must put it in perspective, but you also must honor it and know your feelings are valid, because no one can know what you are going through. Thank you to everyone that has been there to listen and understand. And to those with stones thrown in your still waters, I hope it creates ripples that surge positive energy to push you forward.

Every since my daughter starting walking,
I'm almost positive she danced. Always on her toes ~ wearing her favorite dresses with
the appropriate
~ s p i n a b i l i t y.

There is something so carefree and dizzy about just spinning. This photo from Halloween inspired the words and journal spread below.
When all else fails, just twirl ~ I really could benefit in taking my own advice.

I started this creation at the Collage Sisthars meeting, last weekend. We were playing around using the techniques of Teesha Moore - here's a great list of some of her videos here. It was such a strange, but welcomed luxury to concentrate on one spread for a good 3 hours. I love artistic journaling, I've found it therapeutic in working out the crazy ideas and junk in my head. Lately my entries would not be made for general population consumption. The words on the pages might not be always positive, but they are raw and genuine feelings that help digest the trials in my life lately. Sabrina, author Spilling Open and Erin Kenepp really encouraged this type of therapy.

Back to my muze - she always wants to create, paint and do something "special". So when I was finishing (for now) the page, she wanted to paint like Momma. The honesty in her seemingly random comments always surprise me. "oh, I get it Mommy, you cut all this out and draw over it to make it your own style" -- too true and funny.
I hope you are enjoying making your life and your work in your own style - because, that is really special ~ and don't forget to twirl. xox

one little word

A few years ago I read about the one little word on Ali Edwards' site and many others have started this same tradition, you can see some of the words for 2011 here. My word last year - diligent. Here are the thoughts behind that choice. Although the 2010 started with promise and diligent behavior, without getting too personal, let's just say the last six months have been less than stellar. So I'm looking forward to the new year with optimism and heart. My word for 2011:

} all is calm, all is bright - in my personal matters
} execute some bright ideas - instead of just letting them rattle around in my head
} that I stay bright-eyed and a little less bushy-tailed in the new year - a constant challenge
} over all a bright future - ready for the making

The very first charm - create - was to celebrate a 21 day challenge I did in 2008 with Rhonna Farrer reminding me that creating everyday is what makes me whole. I also made charms for the last two years: sway & diligent. This year seemed a bit different, I feel different, so I decided to make it not just with words, but a symbol - bright. Handcrafted silver swirl with rays of light, then mixed media for the center, encapsulated in resin.

Courage is letting go of the familiar to make a better future.
At times you must walk away from the familiar to fight for a brighter tomorrow.

I won't settle for less than the brighter future and making my life brightest possible in 2011. What about you? What is your word of intention for 2011?

Information and inspiration are not anything without implementation.

Any endeavor, be it fitness, financial, relationships or artistic, you need to actually experience it. You can read books, blogs, websites - listen to podcasts or YouTube videos - view peer efforts on facebook and flickr - but if you don't make time to execute your thoughts ~ you haven't achieved anything. There is so much information and inspiration available it can be overwhelming. And if you're like me, time is a limited commodity - it's hard to sit back, digest and let all the information mull around your head and then - execute, do, CREATE!

That's one of the many reasons I take classes and workshops. I consider it forced studio time. I try to go into my own studio as much as possible, but with everything around me, it's sometimes hard to focus. I had the opportunity to take a few classes this Fall. A workshop by Lisa Bebi, organized by Collage Sisthar, Linda (thank you!) A stylized way to paint over black and white pictures.

And of course, I tried to get more done than possible - so neither are quite finished yet. Hopefully I'll post the completed piece soon.

oh, but the above fun perpetuated further experiment - a card for my dear friend who recently had a baby.

As I've confessed many times before, I have many passions. One started long ago. Bookbinding! Here are a few books from Cheryl Mahowald's book binding class at the Fine Line. I especially love coptic binding, which allows the inner pages to lay flat. We learned binding on tapes, a single needle coptic and then a multi-needle coptic (the big one). This one utilized 8 needles (well nine, if you consider the one that broke!) Here are the treasures from that 4 week class.

And I combined the techniques learned from both classes, plus the ideas I've read in many of my favorite books, including these: (by Corey Moortgat, Karen Michel and Kelly Rae Roberts)

to make this wee little artistic Momma journal. ahhh... isn't she sweet?

And sometimes I just do things on a whim. Like attending the Beckoning of Lovely event on 10.10.10 at 10:10 pm in Millennium Park! I walked a way with a heart a bit more full, a little note reminding me to live for today and penny wishes for clarity for tomorrow.

Wow, that's quite a bit of sharing for one post. And I have quite a few Metal Clay and Jewelry experiments to share also, but that's for another day. Needless to say, I've been busy. Hope the colder weather is helping your carve out a bit of time for you to create and do things your passionate about.

fall into inspiration

A few weeks ago I attended the Cusp Conference and like last year it did not disappoint. Listening and learning from some of the brightest, talented people is always inspiring, encouraging and humbling. And as instructed I emersed myself, letting it all flow over me and through me. I found most of the speakers very insightful, and others just some "ear/brain" candy. I couldn't begin to give an accurate synopsis, but did manage to jot down a few snippets that I thought were inspiring, hope some inspire you also:

"All design is an act of optimism"
- Sean Adams talked at length about the whole design and experience of Disneyland.

"Sustainability is a series of informed trade offs"
- Natalia Allen, is an textile designer creating eco-friendly products, including a textile that is reflective based on her need for something to wear while running at night while still in college.

- Olivia Bee, a 16 year old photographer from Portland, creating authentic images for Converse and Nike.

- Frank Chimero a graphic designer that created intrigued with the infinite potential of every little bit.

But whenever I take in so much information, it takes a while to digest it. Then slowly, patterns emerge. There was so much, but I hope some of these quotes inspire you to make something, do something, be something to evoke change - because change is good.

on the rocks

I must share these little gems I scored at a craft show in Eagle River recently. A beautiful raw citrine geode and a laguna rock. A few real bargins! Hopefully I'll get some sketches started for these pieces soon.

I tend to just keep my little lovelies around rather than set them.

I swooned over this little raw crystal (shown next to the citrine) - a major splurge from my first Bead and Button show - still waiting for the perfect setting.

I guess my obsession with rocks and organic inclusions started with an amazing family trip what I was eight - three weeks exploring the wonders of US national parks. Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons, Yellow Stone National Park, Old Faithful and the Petrified Forest.
Mother nature ~ truly the master artist.
I have quite a few geodes and rocks that are waiting for the perfect setting. But here are a few finished pieces waiting to be adorned.

This geode sits in organic fine silver prongs with etchings on the back.
Oh, and this darling pair, no larger than a half inch, reminded me of tiny muted mellons with the simpliest pearl tacked inside. I guess it's safe to say, with jewelry, as with other things, I like it on the rocks.

artistic playdate with ditto

my preschooler is on a new schedule. which is working out fondly. starting later gives us time to slowly get the morning rolling. Including some art time. Artist play dates with the little one are a bit frantic - she's a bit of a high maintenance artist. But it allowed a bit of time for washing out some of the madness of the weekend in my journal. Well, at least until the water spills over. And I look up to find the glitter glue everywhere. Oh, well can't cry over spilled watercolor water.

studio ~ in a constant state of organizing

So I must admit, if you didn't suspect already - I rarely put away "my toys." Indeed I try to straighten and organize my space, but one good evening in my studio and everything is a muck. Oh well, I've always worked better in organized chaos. And I prefer all my pretties to be visible for inspiration. Sometimes all the "inspiration" becomes a bit overwhelming - and that's when I start putting things away. Or grouping them in ways that make sense for a project. Well here's a few pictures of my studio in somewhat order.

it's a small space in my basement - but I love the natural light and my fun colorful tile pattern.

and when it gets a bit tight, I spill out into "workshop" area. The space is a work in progress, but at least I have room to spread out.

you might not believe this, but his is really organized. it's a shame I usually forget where the proper place is ~ and spend too much time trying to find that one thing that will make my project just perfect. And then, while looking, I'll get distracted and start yet another new creation. Hmmmm... and I wonder why I have so many UFOs.

Here's a bit of my inspiration area, with bullentin board, wall of paper and many little treasures behind the sign that says "create" between the two open shelves. You can barely read it.
So what does your studio look like - how do you keep it organized. And when it is indeed organized, is it harder or easier for you to find the inspiration. I'm thinking "I must be normal" ---- right?

unlikely conversations of a mixed media artist

I sometimes forget that not everyone's mind works in weird ways, like mine. I realize I have a habit of sometimes starting my stories in the middle, but still a little befuddled when the intended recipient doesn't follow. I also find great amusement in seemingly normal questions or conversations in my mixed-media artist mind are met with a little cock to the head - like the RCA dog -- and huh? Thinking you might relate or have a chuckle too - here are a few recent conversations:

Hardware store clerk :
do you have any thinner barbed wire - I was looking for something a little more bendy.

This is one my favorite sayings. I just finished this piece a few weeks ago. I really wanted the roses to be bound in barbed wire -- but in the end the scaled just wasn't right. So I ended up making my own barbed wire.

me : Can you help me put feet on this box?

hubby: Why does a box need feet?
Linda, one of the collage sisthars, had a great presentation on making things rusty. I took this one a bit further - adding dimension and some color. And pegged feet. I'm so happy with how it turned out. It's all ready to sit on a table to hold a remote, cell phone or maybe your most precious letters.

Wings! oh my! I was so excited to find a petrified bumble bee in my studio, this Spring. Many were concerned that I was excited about this treasure, questioning while shaking their head - that's what you thought of?--- yes, of course the wings screamed to be plucked off to make ear wings. And since that day, I've had a more winged creatures happen my way -- all waiting to be encapsulated and shown for their true beauty and mystic charm.

Hubby, again: I need 10 gauge copper. No I can't just use your stripped electrical wire.

What cracks me up the most is the times when there is no question. Like late on a Friday night when everyone is enjoying their Friday fun and I was in the studio creatiing my mixed media scupture, called Perfectly Imperfect. -- I come out and say "hey, can you cut this Barbie in half for me? just right here try not to crush the torso." Which didn't evoke a question at all. Guess my eccentric behavior and requests have started to become normal. hmmm... think I'll have to go to the hardware store for my dose of puzzled looks.

Blame it on the stifling heat one day and the gale force winds taking out tents the next, the low traffic, lack of advertising or dismal sales - this weekend’s show was the most disappointing yet. But instead of having a pity party (no one will attend) it’s much more productive to look at the bright side.

Oh, the people you meet! And the support of fellow artists, friends and family that make you think! Since it wasn’t that busy Saturday, I got to talk to a lot of the artists - actually there were three of us that did PMC work. I was next to Monica from Delia’s Delight Jewelry. Small world, I took a interesting wire wrapping class from Monica many years before. Congratulations to Franki Martin for winning best of show. Franki Martin’s was delight to meet with her PMC pieces as bold and beautiful as she was. It was nice to see how each of us jewelry artisans had a different spin on the material. Hopefully we will be able to meet up for a play date soon.

Congratulations also to 1st place winner, Denise Riesen Photography. Thanks, ladies for the humor and all the help to keep my tent grounded. Denise is also involved with the Andersonville Galleria, an unique concept, 90 artist shops under one roof. I really want to get downtown to check it out. I also met an acrylic artist, June Blunk, whose whimsical colorful pieces were very inspiring. This was her first show after being out of it for a long time. The fun letter photography of Tonya Bestor. She framed your word right there on the spot - instant custom design - impressive. Teresa's displays of Topaj was inspiring. I felt bad that she came down all the way from Greenbay, WI - so the fact this show was very local for me was a blessing, I guess.

I had visits from some artist friends and a few Art for All members. A surprise visit from my Mom. One of the collage sisthars, Cindy, stopped by to keep me company. We had a long discussion on how it’s hard doing shows, especially not profitable ones. And that an artist is an artist, no matter if you sell or not. It’s hard to not need the monetary validation of selling your work. And I think in the last few weeks I felt that I “worked” so hard to produce, but this show also reminded me that for me, being an artist is more about the process, the creating and idea generation - which is work, but it’s fulfilling. And just today, I read Mati Rose’s blog post - and was reminded once again to honor myself and my work.

So all in all. I guess this was a lesson I needed to relearn. I’m glad I had other artist and friends around for support. Hey, thanks.
I've been busy so, I promise to post some of my new creations soon. In the meantime, I should take my own advice, like in this piece.

Reflections of a lovely weekend. Sharing artwork. Collaboration and swapping. Gifts of gratitude. And inspiration and positive creative energy. I love purchasing artwork from artists I admire. But, like many, my economic state just doesn't accomadate frivioulous buying. But when an artist suggests; we swap. I'm all for it! This bartering makes the transaction so much more personal. When Debbie suggested the possibility, I jumped at the chance. I fell in love with this little Bear Lady Momma and her daughter at first glance.

I think it's so sweet and endearing. Reminding me of the bond I share with my daughter. What I loved even more was Debbie's inspiration for the piece. She said the Bear Women was what she envisioned Goldilock's might be from the Bear's point of view. Silly fun, huh? Love creative, smart people and a glimpse into their thoughts.

On Friday, one of my most endearing customers, K, came by first thing in the morning ~ swooning, chatting, admiring all the hard work of everyone and buying plenty. Pretty much making my day ~ and my ego big and fat, like that's really possible. She is always wearing the greatest pieces, so I'm so flattered and humbled that I'm in her overflowing jewelry collection. I've heard many stories of her wearing the pieces she buys, giving them good energy, then passing them on to her friends. She nonchalantly asked if I wear anyone else's jewelry, other than my own. I reply that I mostly wear pieces of artists I admire and know personally. And she takes off the piece she is wearing and gives me this:

Isn't this lovely. I'm wearing it today. I love how it feels - it's so different than I ever wear. It's like having a rock garden massage on my neck. Here is the artist's shop, LaTouchables. She has so many intriguing pieces in her shop. Including feminine cuffs - a recent obsession.
And the last bit of news: While at the Circle of Life Studio during the Northwoods Art Tour, there was a reporter, Leah Gernetzke from The Lakeland Times, taking pictures and chatting with us. Well, during our conversation, a certain thing I said caught her attention, honestly it sounds like me but I don't remember:

"Art is not just a hobby. It's a passion that's fueled from within."

She used the thought as a thread throughout the 2 page article highlighting a few of the artists on the tour including a great picture of Debbie, ending the article with a write up on me. What a pleasant surprise. I'm perpetually grateful for my fellow artisians, family, friends, customers turned friends and random people along my path to my creative aspirations.

Ever meet someone for the first time but feel like you've know them for much longer. Or felt a smile so genuine, it seeped in and touched your soul? Yesterday I was at the Circle of Life Studio with the lovely Debbie exhibiting with a talented group of artists.

It was my day to "work" the show, but it was not work at all. It was more like a wonderful day with fellow artists, enjoying the experience of the studio - insightful conversations, lovely lunch (thanks Greg), enjoying plentiful gardens, with thoughtful surroundings and such positive energy.

Here are a few of her creations. These lovely women each with a personality of their own.
And today will be spent with my little artist again at the studio. We will create tree rings for a collaborative installation for the Tree Whispers project. We will continue our creative experience with imaginations inspired by the Enchanted Festival. So looking forward to watching my little Sprite join in the Fairie fun -- and me, without my wings -- oh well!

new beginnings

I'll take a fresh start anytime possible. A Monday morning - fresh start to a new week. First day of the month - a fresh start on the budget. February - a fresh start on fitness. Spring - a renewed growth in my gardens. A new year - life resolutions, like being diligent.
Or a new birthday year triggering a recomittment to business goals and artistic aspirations. Since it seems that I don't deliver on my goals unless I write them down and have deadlines (even self inflicted), here they are:

I remember vividly the months before my 30th birthday, I was 29 and holding - thinking of all the things I should have/could have done before becoming "middle-aged". Like a bee before the dooming frost. But as I approach 39, I have a renewed sense of who I am and what I want to become. I'm letting go of any preconceived notions and expectations and welcoming possibilities fearlessly. Knowing each day I'll try to make better than the last. Trying to make choices that will allow myself to be more free. Concentrating on the here and now - not the past or what might be. It's in the here and now I will create my future. I'll take care of today, so my tomorrows can take care of themselves.

This is Debra Ketchum Jircik. I was fortunate to meet her last year at the Art on Main Show in Three Lakes, WI. It was an honor to be among such talented artists. Then I had the opportunity to spend the day at Debra's studio - papermaking last Fall. She has regular papermaking workshops to inspire. Circle of Life Studio will be part of the Northwoods Art Tour July 23th, 24th & 25th. And she asked me to be part of the tour! So excited! I'll be at the studio (4 miles from Eagle River, travel south 3 miles on Hwy 45 to Evergreen Road. Left on Meta Lake Road, first right on Gaffney to 3720) on Friday, if you would like to see me in person. But my pieces will be at the studio all weekend. lingering butterflies

So I've been noticing butterflies have been taunting me - following me lately. My first recollection was a dreary, cool day in early Spring. It was morning and my daughter was being especially defiant. I started yelling, correction I have to admit I was screaming at her. We were late, she didn't want her hair combed, wouldn't eat her breakfast, the usual arguments. But then she said, "look Mama, a butterfly" and indeed on the screening drape there was a butterfly. I gently scooped it up and placed my cupped hands outside and opened - letting go. And in that moment, I was reminded of the importance of gentleness, independence and flight - keeping life in balance, especially through challenges. Since that morning, I have had many encounters of the flittering beings. I know it's the season, but I believe they are more than just flittering past. When they appear, they follow me, lingering about, like a friend that wants to say something - sensing, but will not probe or condemn. Well, I'm listening - trying.

Dew Drop Bracelet with Janice Berkebile--- great silver fusing class.

Janice was a fun teacher - with a lot of one on one attention. So if you are planning on coming up this weekend, you should consider taking one of her classes, I think there is still room in a few. And if you can't be here, there is online learning at Beaducation - some classes even free! So get to it! And learn something new.
I definitely got my workout today. I'm so happy I finished these two bangle bracelets. Some of the "dew drops" were being a bit stubborn. But I fixed them - just breathe - and think... BALLS! ;) I wire wrapped a heart bezel charm on the one, all ready for mixed media and resin when I get home.
The show floor opens in 5 minutes, but I did quite a bit of shopping yesterday at the Meet the Teachers - so I'm sure my funds will run out way before my interest will! And gosh, 3 days, I think that is all I can handle of all this fun and frolick. I'm exhausted, but energized. So grateful for the days here. Oh, time's up! Better get to the trample zone - these women are ruthless ;)

I've been here less than 24 hours but it has done wonders for my soul.

I jumped right in with Cristi Friesen's Steampunk Heart-o-Rama. Here are a few hearts I created - destined to be embellished a bit further and made into pins or pendants. Her personality is very much intune with her quirky book, constantly encouraging and making us laugh. She showed so much in the little 3 hour time frame, her energy is contagious and is fuel by her "drug" of choice - CHOCOLATE.

Today was a Polymer Plates and BronzClay Bell with Louise Duhamel. I'll post pictures later - they will take all night to fire.
{ update Thursday : will NOT have my Bronze pieces to take home, fuse blown on the kiln - not sure where it was in the cycle, or if my pieces were even in there - but either way, it possible that it might be an epic failure and turn the bronze to dust. But, I'll think positive thoughts on their safe arrival in my mailbox soon }
I love BronzClay, but it's not quite as instant gratification like PMC. One of the main reasons I take classes is to learn how others teach - Louise was very patient, methodical and orgainzed. The class was a bit much for one day, but we fit it in. I was happy to try the polymer plate process first hand, especially after my team member Kelly Fehr, recently demystified the process with her YouTube video. I look forward to practicing this technique this summer and teaching the process in the fall at the Fine Line Creative Arts Center.

wise eyes charm - the process

LOOK! THEY'RE HERE! I love to receive surprises in the mail, so when my self-address package arrived I wasn't even in the house before I opened it.
Here are my characters, right before I sent them out.

I love combining mixed-media with my Precious Metal Clay especially with a swap, it's a bit like sending a little extra piece of me. I shared some of my inspiration a previous post and I had quite a few ideas, but I guess I'll just have to save them for the next swap. But all my ramblings seemed to kinda "poof" come together one day. And like most of my ideas, they always seem a bit clearer on paper. Even with a few set backs, I'm so happyto have a wonderful team to challenge me and make me see my ideas through.
So, if you are interested here is my process:

I found this hinge at a scrapbooking convention. I really liked the femine shape. I used it as a template for my original piece. I started with rolling out a chunk of PMC Standard 6 cards thick. Standard shrinks 30%, so that would help me achieve the final "charm" size. I put the hinge on the rolled out clay and with a needle tool started to cut around the shape. I wanted it a bit shorter, so I did the top first than moved the hinge slightly to achieve the squatter appearance. To create the bezel, I used coiled clay around the perimeter. So in the pic above there is the original hinge, the original fired shape and then I made a mold of the original. PMC3 was used for the actual charms which shrinks about 10-12%. The final charm is shown in the foreground (which I think makes it look a bit bigger than it is? But you get the idea.)

After pressing the clay into the mold, I gently took it out, pinched it back into shape, let it dry and added any syringe to the bezel to make the inside a bit more deep. Honestly this mold process was not as smooth as I hoped, I think the bezel was just to shallow. But hey, there was a deadline to meet! Here are a few all sanded and ready for the kiln.

I patinaed the fired pieces to give it a bit more definition. But realized early on, that buffing 24 charms in the time allowed was just not possible. Once again a bit of stress comes over me. But I instead just fire the patinaed pieces in my kiln again and it takes of most the black. I proceed to tumble while getting the ready for the "fun part" - Mixed media.

Using Golden's fluid acrylics: Naples Yellow, Raw Umber and Titanium Buff I start the backgrounds and let dry. Then, I got ready for the drawings.

I first set up a sheet with guides, so my illustrations weren't too big for the charm. I tested different pens - pitt pens, rapidiograph, extra fine sharpie, really sharp pencil, even thought my hand carved birdie stamp might work, but no. Then I took out my favorite drawing pen - an extra fine ball point - and that worked like, well, a charm.

Placing a tissue over the guides, I started to doodle. Little scapes, cute roses, sun, pebbles, then eyes, tons of eyes. The children's book, Ping came into my head. Ping, the little lost duck was looking for his home "Their home was a boat with two wise eyes on the Ynagtze River..." It really wasn't until I did all this random doodling that I knew what would actually go into my fine silver frames. Doodling in the sunshine, just letting my head wander and all these little characters started to appear.

Since the tissue paper would turn clear once resin is applied, I painted the back of the eyes white, so they would pop. Then added color to each eye from the front with watercolor and a bit of acrylic. (I tried color pencil, but it kept ripping the tissue.)

I cut or in some cases tore out the eyes and placed them in their frames. I started to like the look, but they didn't have as much impact as I thought they would. Then another ah ha moment - thinking back to figure drawing. They needed a highlight. That twinkle of white made all the difference I think.

Placing the charms on plastic material (in this case a plastic bag) would help if any of the Ice Resin seeped out. And before pouring the resin, I used a small cotton swab saturated in resin to gently burnish down the tissue, then using a toothpick, I dropped resin in the bezels and guided the fluid into each corner. They took about 3 days to fully cure, then I attached the jump rings.

Here are a few of my favorite characters. I think it's interesting how much unique expression is in each one. Sometimes I ask myself, why do I force myself to do these collaborative projects? The stress, the deadlines? It's to help work out my ideas, to focus, to actually FINISH and share my ideas with wonderfully talented artists. I truly hope their wise eye creative charm always helps them find their way home to where they are the most creative.

random creating

I've been a bit blog quiet. But here are a few fun things keeping me busy.

Girl's craft Night. A few beers, great company, hot glue gun and a fun project. Of course I made a few modifications, including adding some color with an ink pad but you can find the wreath instructions here.

Finished my project started at the February Collage meeting. A magnetic board for my Mom for Mother's Day, complete with little magnet pictures of her grandchildren.Presented a fun mixed-media project for the Art For All group. Which was inspired by a booklet I made for my boss for her birthday from the original pieces I created for the 2010 calendar we sent out during the holidays.
A pendant for my sister, heartful wings, a bit similar to this pendant. Created in memory of loved ones that lost their struggle with cancer.

weed or not a weed ~ that is the question

Springtime... ahhhhh... pips popping... tulips bursting... brushes with colors of fancy. Love the freshness of Spring!
But with all the newness comes a resergence of WEEDS! And I find myself ever year with the same dilemna "weed or not a weed?" "Did I plant this?" If you saw my haphazard gardens you would understand why. Everything is a bit messy, no symmetry, random flower here and there - a little crocus that got accidentally buried by a rock. And I like it that way! I like the surprise of a single Iceland Poppy hidden behind the forsynthia bush in a somewhat neglected garden in back. (I wish my daughter hadn't picked it, but that's another story ;)
But back to the weeds. I know the true weeds - sticker bushes with thistles and tap roots, crab grass, clover. Hey, I've even neglected them so long they were beautiful. But a few years ago in a desperte search for quick color in a garden I dug out late in the season. I scattered wild flower seeds. A bunch of them. And since then, I question everything I pull out in that area. But I left a few this year, that looked promising, wondering weed? not weed? I'll let them grow, possibly flower, then I'll decide.

Last year I had a few such suspects, they grew fearlessly and their flowers were lovely - bunches of muted purple flowers on a tall sturdy stalk. I asked my neighbor if she knew what they were, being brought up in Nebraska she identified them right away. "yeah, that's milkweed" - after she said it I kinda remembered milkweed but I said "really? but it's so pretty" - she said, I guess? but if you don't want the whole garden to be overtaken next year, pull it. I pulled them thinking "wow, how was I fooled, how did I let them get so tall?"
So while I was weeding (or selectively non-weeding) this year, I thought how weeding relates to design and art. And I guess I have this dilema in the studio and office sometimes too. I know the true big ugly ideas(weeds) that pop up in my head, but have to let them out - so they don't get too far and squelch a good idea that might reveal itself. It's the one's that have potential, that are a bit less nasty, that I seem to have a hard time weeding. It's like my garden, if I don't give it a chance, I will never know. But on the other hand, they soak up my time and energy, just to be pulled? you see, dilema. So I have a few weeds in my garden right now. I actually thinned and spaced them out! So they'll grow better. And I'll nuture them, let them grow - but I'll have to know when to pull them when there true nature is revealed. I have to be more diligent on my pulling. It's with this editing that encapsulates the art.
I have learned that if you don't let the ugly out, you won't know the beautiful.
And sometimes it's from the most unsuspecting seedling, that become the brightest petals. But not everything is a flower. And sometimes, even if it is not a weed, if you didn't intentionally plant it - it's most likely a weed.

In almost every artist statement I've written, I try to answer "where do my ideas come from?" And the answer seems almost a bit trite, something like "from nature, my experiences, my daughter and many talented people in the artist community I'm lucky to know" and even though this sounds a bit broad, it is true. It was evident in my creation of the charm I'm creating for the EMC team charm swap. And instead of spoiling the surprise for the 22 recipients on the final design or process - I thought is would be fun to share with you my inspiration - just as a little tease.
I'm the type of creator that gathers, gathers, gathers and then finally it all comes together. So here are some of my random gatherings...

And with all this gathering and the wonderful online resources of the internet, I'm very intune with the concerns of copying and plagiarism. In fact I was just reading
Pikaland's issue #7 of their Good to Know e-zine on plagiarism. You can get your copy here or read it online on issuu.

Ideas are viral and completely unique ideas are hard to come by. So here are a few things I do to try to make sure my work is a bit different and actually mine.
{ when in doubt, give credit
{ I keep a journal (several in fact) and draw, write, doodle in them all the time. There is something with free form doodling that seems to be the subconscious trying to talk to me. I try to find patterns and purpose in my sketches which often don't reveal themselves long after I've made my entry.

{ I take classes from amazing artists, try to learn their technique. Then I let go for a bit and try again a few days or weeks later. I'll do the technique in different ways trying to incorporate my style with new understanding.
{ and I keep on creating, even if it's not turning out.
This reminds me of a quote I've read "The enemy of the great is often the good."
But the actual original quote is "Better is the enemy of good." -Voltaire
Which would suggest you always are looking for more. Most of the time I have to get the "ugly" out of my head, before I even get to the good, let alone the elusive great.
These are just a few ways I try to make sure it's my "voice" - what suggestions or insights might you have?

I know I've mentioned quite a bit about this Month of Earrings challenge, but what does 30 one of a kind (OOAK) earrings look like? Done in about 45 days - well like this:

Some ask, why do I take on challenges like this? where do I find the time, why do I create this pressure? Well, partly out of need and partly want. I'm constantly needing to challenge myself to grow as an artist and a person. I know if I don't give myself deadlines and goals, it's likely I'll just flit around aimlessly, which might be easier, but I enjoy the challenge and learn something new every time I push my self. And I want to make a difference even if it's in a small way. What does it feel like? Ahhh. Fulfilling not only do I have the interesting new works to build off of, but six of the thirty have sold and I'll be sending a $150 check to the McKenna Foundation shortly. It's just a little token of love that my creating can have an effect on another family and it feels good. Thanks to all of you that purchased earrings and help make that donation possible.

Please indulge me, here are a few things I learned:
{ my self diagnosis of adult ADD is quite accurate - oh those shiny objects! I have to keep a handle on my personality traits and reign them in.
{ There is a time and place for everything. I tend to bite off a bit more than I can chew. Why, oh why, would I consider a setting tricky, matching bezel set cabs for this challenge - maybe I just wanted to see if I could do it - but I didn't give myself the time for testing and errors. Well, no they didn't turn out, I felt like I failed and almost gave up. I have to find a better time frame to try a more leisure exploration.
{ I had a lot of fun ideas in my sketchbooks just aching for a chance and came into fruition this month. I love to sketch, but I really need to actually DO too!
{ ironically I thought procrastination was my main obstacle, and although it might be a challenge…
{ honestly, it's the judgment and giving up before I give the idea a chance. If something didn't turn out the way I planned, usually I moved on to another piece. No wonder it seems like I don't have a lot to show - except for many UFOs(unfinished objects) - for all my time in the studio. This challenge made me see my ideas through, especially in the last week. Because if I judged every piece completely, I would not have made all 30 pairs.
I love how Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of the book I'm enjoying right now, Eat, Pray, Love talks about creativity in this video on TED.

Do your dance... and if the divine genius does not appear, do your dance anyhow and ole to you none the less - just for having the shear stubbornness to show up.

Oh, I've been working on another fun challenge this month! The EMC Team has another charm swap in the process, wish me luck, they are due at the end of April. I will post process and new pics soon!

My mother has the most beautiful Magnolia tree. I was lucky enough to capture it in full bloom. Here is the original. nice but a bit too saturated for my taste.

Then I created this vintage shot with a little help of some photoshop filters and a grunge brush from this site. Might play with the color a bit more, but think I'd rather work in my garden instead. Hope you are enjoying your Spring.

what's in a name

I might have mentioned this before, but it's one of my endearing idiosyncrasies, so I will reveal it again. I name just about all my creations. And mostly not just name, but have a whole story behind the thought. Most of time, I think customers will make up their own story, but never quite as elaborate as the one cast on to it by it's creator. Case and point: I was at a show in Naperville in the beginning of December and I was talking about my creations, the fact most have names and personalities, when she asked the name of one of my newest pieces (honestly finished in the wee hours the night before). The name hadn't come to me yet, so I think I might have said "unsettled" or something just as, well unsettling. And she kindly put it down and walked away. I thought, really? I hadn't thought my naming really made such an impact, but I guess it's more than just idle babble.
A New Era is the name of this recent creation.

Actually, it's proper name... bring forth a new era. In my sketchbook, I have drawn this piece many ways, but the concept is constant: ripples when made in the water continue on and on disrupting the calm waters. Truly, probably to determent, I am not a very politcal person, but I believe the leaders in this Nation have created a series of ripples that cannot be stopped. I'm sure these actions have affected just about everyone in this nation. A New Era is not neccessarily a negative reflection of the current state of our economy and health care system, but just an acknowlegdement. The once strong stable foundation has started to tear, the ripples will not stop and the structure cannot just be patched. It's time to reflect, rebuild and begin again. This a nation is becoming unrecognizable... there is a need to begin a new era.

love: caring, sharing - strength and compassion

One of my original posts was about a collaboration I organized to help a very special little miracle. McKenna, just celebrated her 3rd birthday today. I'm looking forward to a night out this Saturday - Casino Night - and celebrate her and her family. Even though I would have liked to organized another artist collaboration, seems I can barely get myself together these days. But I wanted to do a little something extra. I have been participating in Vickie Hallamark's Month of Earrings Challenge, and I thought what better way to cherish these little creations is to give to a family that is so dear.
I'm donating 75% of the proceeds (just keeping enough to help with the cost of shipping and a bit of supplies) of my Month of Earrings to "For the Love of McKenna" Foundation. Here is just a taste of a few pieces completed. I'm still photographing them and will place them on Flckr as I complete them. The deadline for the 30 earrings is April 1st, so I hope to have them all up by then.

one word

I decided last year to pick a word for the year. I first read about it on Ali Edwards blog. My word for 2009 was SWAY. It came to me one day, last spring, in yoga class. While trying to hold the "Tree" pose, standing on one leg, with the other resting on the inner knee, hands stretched up to the sky trying to maintain balance. Then I remembered, yes my constant quest of balance - like I proclaimed as my mission on this blog and so many other places. It was then I realized sometimes balance is best achieved by not just standing firmly, but allowing yourself to sway a bit and recover. As a passionate person, designer, artist and Mom, I have finally come to the conclusion that true balance cannot be achieved. It takes the ability to sacrifice and make small course corrections as you go. But honestly, by the end of 2009, I kinda felt that my sway was becoming more like a palm tree in a hurricane. It was then I realized that I forgot about another aspect of holding the Tree pose in yoga, is not only balance and sway but to focus on a spot in front of you. So for 2010, I altered my word a bit. Allowing for the sway, but also the focus. DILIGENT is my one word this year. My personality really works against any effort I make to remain focused and adhere to a task. But this year I will be diligent in my efforts. Trying to focus more and review my options critically and saying no to obligations and tasks that don't let me work towards my goals. It may be financial and physical as January and February. Or more spiritual and artistic endeavors as I have so far in March. All the while trying to be in the present and allowing for the sway - but with diligence and focus.

another great class last weekend

Have I told you lately how much I love teaching. Here are the creations of last weekend's Taste of PMC class. Wonderful, huh?
Pendants, charms and pins, oh my. The circles with the pebbles were made by Laurie. A group of seven friends who are all turning 60 this year will adorn these handmade delights. Several lovely pendants were also made. And I love the folding and capturing of the dicro in the pin in the middle. Sandra's composition combining another dicro on the bottom really is lovely. And I can't wait to see what Marian paints for the inside of the bezel on the top right. I'm always so inspired by what everyone creates. Thanks for a great day. And a special thanks to Laurie for taking the picture. I always forget to bring my camera.

just too much

I recall a recent phone conversation with my Dad. We are both doing something while talking, as usual, and I ask him about his day. He goes on to tell me what's on his agenda for the day, what order, who and what. And it all sounds a bit overwhelming and there is a bit of panic in his voice and I say "Dad, I totally understand..." there is a pause and he says, "you know, I really think you do." We might not have a lot in common, he really doesn't get all this arty stuff, but, he always expects too much from his day and feels a bit defeated and surprised when it all doesn't get done. I know, because the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
But he is a lover of life with an adventurous spirit, a retired fireman, fixer-upper, jack of all trades with a can do attitude that is contagious. A team maker and life coach. A loyal friend, helping neighbor (one neighbor insisted he was her angel while trying to help her after having a stroke) and I am so proud of him.
My parents are on a cruise through the Panama Canal right now. Instead of relaxing at his "age", he's repelling through the dense forest in Ochos Rios and sending the Grandkids a geography quiz (providing longitude and latitude and having them guess where they are) and probably making sure they get up at "o 9 hundred" so they don't miss anything. I also love that he is the organizer, the one that gets and keeps people together. He recently started a blog to stay connected to his fellow retired firefighters, which is completely cool.

So, if the to do list gets to be too much, I'll let it go and try to be more diligent tomorrow. Knowing that my intentions are good and living a full life is even better.

doable challenge - a month of earrings

I really wanted to jump into the Ring a Day challenge that started 2010, but knew my life would only set me up for failure. But this I can do! I have to play a little catch up, but I'm really looking forward to coming up with some fun new designs. And here is the start. A challenge, a deadline with inspiring artists. Won't you join me?

heart broken

So, last night while creative healing I put a few copper and bronze pieces in the kiln. When I took them out, I was greated by some lovely color, But upon further inspection I noticed some cracking, then as I tried to clean them up with a steel brush - I got dust! All these chubby hearts were hard on the outside and pulverized in the middle. Looking on the bright side, because I'm all about possibilities, I can mix these lovely grains and chunks with my newly acquired Golden mediums for a lovely textured background. I've been experimenting a bit with the firing schedule to accommodate the higher temperature required for the copper. But this is new. If you fired Copper Clay, do you have any pointers or a proven firing schedule? It's a bit hard to figure what I did wrong this time, a few variables from previous successful firings. In this particular batch:
}I used up some old copper and bronze clay (stored in the same baggie, wrapped separately.
}It was kept in a cool place and seemed pretty pliable when working with it.
}some might not have been totally dry, but most were - that didn't seem to matter in the fired pieces
}used coconut carbon in a steel container
}here's where I think I went wrong. I fired it with a Ramp of 500 an hour to 1700 (way too hot even for copper) and held it for 3 hours in my Paragon kiln.
Oh well, better luck next time, I guess.

oooo, must share. I just received my shipment of Golden acrylics and mediums from Dick Blick. I've been working like crazy in various "day jobs" this January. Let's just say I spent a bit of the money before getting the check, sorry Dave Ramsey.
Here was my wish list and why I "needed" them:
{Crackle Paste : okay no need for elaboration! who doesn't need to crackle, the good honest, it will happen crackle.
{Golden GAC 900 - for setting or mixing with paint for fabric! oooo... should of had this for the Collage Sisthars Mixed Media Madness back in November
{archival Spray Varnish - like workable fixative, but better
{various fluid colors : to add to my growing stock : hanza yellow, a few irridescent like Quinsadone Violet (a modern color) and titan buff for a lovely opaque base for skin colors
{Micaceous Iron Oxide : really thinking I should have bought the bigger jar of this beautiful dark gray ground with mica sparkles. Also going to try mixing it with the fluid Pyrole Orange for a lovely dark terra cotta with sparkly ground
{light molding paste : make use of my stencils, some I created when I took an online class with Mary Ann from Dispatch from LA
{matte medium : must have for image transfers, gluing and skins
{Clear Tar Gel : use like self leveling resin, or for dripping -
Jakson Pollock would have loved this medium
Some were in my goodie bag, lucky me:
{fibre paste : dries really slow
{coarse moldeling paste : adding great texture
Others that are still on my list, had to stop somewhere ;)
{absorbent ground - can make acrylic act like watercolor
{silver point ground - makes surfaces like scratch board
{digital mediums - this is just another wonderful monster I must try later, ink jet from your printer on anything! Aluminum Foil, fabric, gel skins

sos - more workshop inspiration

If you live in the Chicagoland area, you may or may not know of the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles - a wonderful place of inspiration and classes ranging from jewelry making, pottery, painting to fiber work and textiles. Just this weekend I was one of the lucky ones to attend Sandie Bacon's Lecture, on Golden paints and mediums. I was really hoping for some clarity on their vast array of products, which happened, kinda. It was such a whirlwind of information, I walked away with so many ideas, I thought my head might explode. The resource materials, new color palette and descriptions of each medium was well worth the $5, plus a little goodie bag with samples, I was more than elated. Well, and of course I have quite a "wish list" of new art supplies. If you missed the lecture and are a bit mystified by the Golden Acrylics, I noticed Valley Ridge - outside of Madison - has a similar lecture with a 2-day workshop to follow so you can explore all the nuances. Here's another workshop coming up that you might find fun.Coming up in March, Mary Hettmansperger, one of my favorite artist will be having a guest workshop also at the Fine Line. I love her style, weaving and contemporary combinations of metals. And her book, Wrap, Fold, Stitch and Rivet is great, too.

This is the charm swap bracelet the Etsy Metal Clay team donated to the Etsy store, Hearts for Haiti. It sold in one day for $350. It was fun to create the charms for the swap. But I'm so proud to be a part of such a wonderful, generous and heartful group of artisans.
and this is a pendant I personally donated, that also sold in one day! It's such a wonderful feeling to be able to do a little bit of good in the world.

sos - recharge with online education

Shiny Object Sunday - learning inspiration. Anytime I feel a bit creatively drained, I try a new technique or take a class to recharge. 2009 was the year of INPUT for me - taking classes not only on location but online too. I found it's easy to take a class online - you can log on when it's convenient for you. It's a great way to learn techniques and meet other like-minded artists from all over. There are so many to chose from, here are just a few:

Susan Tuttle's photo manipulation class, Visual Poetry is starting next week. I used a few of her techniques on the image above this post.

inspiring people - helping haiti

Compassion of people and willingness to organize in their own way to help heal truly inspires me.

It's been a week since the massive, 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince. The damage to buildings is extensive and the number of injured or dead is estimated, as of today, they fear over 200,000.

I'm a type of person that really doesn't know what to do or say during times of serious distress. I usually just do, create, cook or something like that. So I was so glad to see other artists doing the same. A shop was created on etsy by Victoria van der Laan called Hearts for Haiti: take a look and know all proceeds from your purchase will go directly to Doctor Without Borders. As you might have guessed they are overwhelmed by the response of artists, so it might be a while before my contribution is posted. I have to hope that all these "little" actions in humanity will help heal.

one of my pieces has been purchased! yay. And one more is waiting on a home. Maybe it's the perfect piece for you? Help Haiti and have a lovely pendant - sounds like a win/win.
as of today Jan 25th - $17,500 have been raised for Haiti. Amazing!

sos - start small

Here's a little "shiny object sunday" for you. Ever want to start a blog, but maybe it just seemed a bit too daunting. Or maybe you don't know what to say, or you're concerned that everyone would have access to it. Well, maybe you should start small, and a tumblr blog is for you! Very simple to use. Here's a screen shot of the one I started for my daughter and the crazy things she says. As you can see it's a really simple interface. You are also able to password protect it, which makes me feel a bit better of posting an online journal, that I can share with close family and friends. What about you? A little project? Share a quote of the day or a picture the day. Maybe document weight loss or exercising habits and achievements? Maybe you should try tumblr. The tumblr won't take the place of this more robust blog for me, but it's quick and simple. Sometimes it's easier to start small. Thanks Denise for showing me this gem.

Shiny Object Sunday

I'm constantly distracted by wonderous things - online and in real life. In the back of my mind I think, oh I should share this with "so and so" or I should put this on my blog and I have incorporated a few into my e-newsletter. I call them shiny objects. I sometimes feel like a little bird seeing a glimpse of shimmer in the trees and I follow it. Same is true online. So I'm going to start a regular post I call Shiny Object Sundays. SOS - a little dire - but for a creative person that needs a bit of inspiration, it might seem like a need for a distress call.

holiday hiatus is over.

I can't believe it's been so long since my last post. I'll be posting a lot more in 2010. Hope you'll join me.Like many things of structure, I have a love/hate relationship with New Year Resolutions. On my list are some of the usual suspects: diet, exercise, learn, grow, make time for art. But to put all the expectation on one day is so daunting, like how am I supposed to be on a diet with all the wonderful leftovers in the fridge. And gosh, what’s the use of being more financially responsible when everyone is having half price sales. And another, how am I going to make sure I get into the studio when the house is in complete chaos and I really would rather sit on the couch and watch bad tv or review and select my favorite photos of the season or umm.....facebook! Why make an intention, just to set yourself up for failure? So I’m dragging it out a bit this year. Today is the first day I feel like the “holidaze” is over. And I can start on my intentions, knowing that there are more important “new beginnings” that I celebrate everyday - the sunrise or a newly falling snow. And to look forward to like a new moon, first crocus to break through it’s winter blanket or my daughter’s smile and constant dancing. Looking ahead is how I intend to try to keep this year’s intentions.
Looking ahead.... and these! Calendars, datebooks and lists, oh my! I don’t know if this says something lack of time management (see the star - it’s from a dear friend and reads “born to be an half hour late). I guess I'm a bit of a procrastinator, but more so I just lack a bit of focus sometimes. But I hope to stay on schedule in the 2010. It's a little ironic but, I have either worked on or ordered no less than 5 calendars even before last August. My collage sisthar extradonaire, Jean was featured in this calendar, so of course I need that one. And the ever inspirational Kelly Rae was autographing early orders of her datebook - so must have. Then the perpetual calendar done as a collaborative is a must create (I’ll blog about this process soon). Then the awesome opportunity to create a calendar of all my artwork for my employer, Bending Design (thanks for the push Sharon)! If you would like one of the small accordion fold calendars, with my artwork, email me with your address and I’ll send it to you! (just note I have limited number left) Lastly, round it off with a few photo calendars - I would say I should be pretty on task. If only it were that easy right? Here was my table yesterday, trying to create a to do list! Ugh!

Well I’ll try, starting today. Will this mean a more task oriented and detailed 2010 - that has yet to be seen. Hope your intentions are shaping up nicely. Happy New Year.

student work - bronze clay

Last week was a bit crazy, but one of the many highlights was my Explorations in Bronze Clay class at the Fine Line. What a great group of artists. Here are just a few of the pieces:

Marlene, Frani, Pamela, Jennifer. I usually don't have time to photograph the student works, like Joyce's - she picked hers up on Saturday, so I didn't get a chance to take a picture, but she did a few twisted pendants that also turned out delightful.
I really love how the bronze pieces are right out of the kiln. As you can see, the patina caused by the oxidized charcoal is as varied as the artists' idea. They can be polished to bring out the bronze, or left as is. Thank you everyone for a great day. If you like, check out some of the new classes for 2010.

mixin' it up

last but not least - the third in the series. Gocco print (copper, silver, gold metallic inks) with the debut of the 2009 mixed-media madness papers as and accent. a bit different than the last two, instead of painting, there is zen-like doodles to create the nuances of each piece of unique art. Perfect to give or keep. The photo is a bit light, I'll try to take a picture in the morning light. So glad I finished what I started. Focus, such an amazing thing, I should try it more often. warm woolen mittens

just like grandma made - okay not my grandma ;) but I'm sure you could find some warm striped mittens at one of the Christmas Art Shows coming up, along with these cards. Christmastime at the Fine Line starts Dec 4 - 13 OR if you are in the Naperville area, the Naperville Country Club has a holiday Boutique on Dec. 1 between 12 - 4. Come by for some holiday spirit.

The second in the holiday series. Limited edition of 28. Watercolor, Gocco print and acryllic accents. Signed and dated.

One more holiday card design to finish. Hopefully by tomorrow. Then on to more mixed-media jewelry making. I should look into hiring a few elves.

I have been handcrafting my holiday card for several years. This year I decided to make a special set available for purchase. Here's the first in a small series of limited edition holiday cards, using some of my favorite techniques:

These are a limited edition of 50. I'm thrilled with what the customer/friend who has purchase the first 25 said "...for my family and closest friends ... they will be my gifts, a work of art and a card of holiday greeting all rolled into one."

I started with an original illustration from my sketchbook, then inked it all in black. I scanned in the illustration and made it to size, printed it on a lazer printer. I mixed the special ink and gocco printed the tree. Gocco was developed in Japan. In gocco printing, a thermally imprinted screen is used to hand print liimited edition of images. Production of print gocco materials has recently been discontinued, I have limited materials. Gocco prints are now becoming an increasingly rare form of printing.

The little bird was also an original sketch. I hand carved the bird stamp using mastercarve substrate and carving tools. Now I can position the little cardinals anywhere.

I'm finishing up a few different designs. Each edition will be less than 50, all signed and numbered. These are monarch size card (7.25 X 3.625) and come with a open end policy envelope. perfectly imperfect

I've been a bit blog quiet. It's been an eventful and productive October, but I have a lot to talk about and many posts to get out of my sketch book and into cyber space. So here's a little look into one of my creations. When I started sketches for my piece for the Collage Sisthars Alphabetica Show my idea/sketch looked like this.
A happy angel with wings that flutter a light air about her, a heart put away in a drawer in her chest. But when completed it looks like this.

After a few unplanned but happy accidents, like my bronze bust breaking. It seems more dark, but somehow more real. I'm not sure if this an evolution in my work or the work taking on a life of it's own. Letting the dark come through, intergrating my short comings rather than hiding them. This piece was originally intended to use the flash card "woman" and depict a happy, motherly angel, but has unintentionally become a bit of a self portrait, distorted, shredding of what a woman means and the roles played. These roles are a bit tattered and worn but truthful and heartfelt. Perfectly imperfect.

how 'bout 'em apples

Had a wonderful family day. Apple picking with the girls. Someone said "how 'bout them apples" on our walk and it reminded me of my Grandfather. It's nice how a scent, image or saying can remind you of those that are not with us in this life, but are still in our hearts. Here is a video I whipped up this evening.

Such a fun and quick video program. If I would have done this in iMovie, I would have never finished it (hmm, hence I have a ton of video not edited) But maybe you should try to put your day to music. it's kinda fun! a whirl wind in chicago

I'm in complete awe and humbled by my experience the last two days. Attending the CUSP Conference was a remarkable roller coaster ride of emotion, inspiration and absolutely intense. The creative talent and ideas of speakers was so diverse, but seemed to be speaking the same language. Conversations of a better future by hard work, perseverance, confidence, compassion and design. It was inspirational, spiritual, political, challenging, admiration and intriguing. In the words of Greg Samata (one of the curators of the event) "I love smart people... I wish I was one". All this higher level thinking has indeed made my head swirl with possibility and promise. I'm so thankful to Sharon, that I was able to attend.

a charmed life - the process

Here's a little sneak peak at my process for the charms I highlighted in my previous post. You might be a lucky recipient of your own personal charm, just comment on this post.

To start I formed 14 gauge wire into a square, added the circle with solder, pulled it and hammered it into a shaped that's a bit off.(shown on the lower right). Now to create the bezel, I used two part molding compound RTV and made a mold (the green blob shown top). With fresh bronze clay I formed small squarish balls, I did this to try to keep them about the same weight. I pressed the clay into the mold and smoothed out the back. I sign (or stamp if I'm doing that) while it's in the mold, so the charm is not distorted.
The one thing I really love about bronze clay versus silver clay, is the way it carves. After being in a dehydrator to leather hard state, with an exacto and some carving blades, I finished off the sides, digging out the center for the jump ring and cleaning up the bezel. I did some light sanding where needed. Then when completely dry, I loaded them in a kiln. A stainless steel container with an inch of charcoal between the 3 layers. I put the container on posts, so the air will be able to heat the whole container evenly. The one main challenge in bronzeclay is it's unpredictable nature. It needs to ramp up slowly and hold temp for a long time, but I've had success with the following: on my Paragon Kiln, I set my program to ramp up 250 degrees per hour, holding at 1565 for 3 hours.
beautiful, right out of the kiln, see how different each of the charms are, all from the same firing. Like I said, unpredictable, but lovely none-the-less.
with a little buffing (I used a scotch pad for a matte look) the patina in the inside really starts to show.
I was almost tempted to leave the inside as is, loved the coloring.
next I placed little mixed media pieces in each one: scissors, tweezers, pva (acid free archival glue) and a lot of time and patience for each colorful creation.

Here is the first layer of resin to seal the mixed media art. I use Envirotext which mixes 50/50. But I know there are a lot of other jewelers' grade resin, including Susan Lenart-Kazmer's ICE Resin.

For the final touch, after letting the resin set-up for two hours, I added the words. I prefer them to blend into the background a bit, so I placed them right on the resin. But if you would like it to be brighter, apply PVA to seal the words before pouring the last bit of resin. I placed a jump ring (I used solder-free Snapeez jump rings from Via Murano through the hole and they are ready to attach to a bracelet or string on a cord.

The EtsyMetalClay team held a charm swap. Here is my contribution, doesn't it look like a tapestry of goodness? These are made from BronzClay, mixed-media collage and resin. I love this type of collaboration, I'm so lucky to be involved with such a talented group of people and I'm anticipating the lovely pieces of art to arrive next week. Today, was the due date! Finally received my jumprings, so Teresa, they are in the mail.

What I especially love, is the team all agreed to make one extra charm that will be used to create a charm bracelet that will be donated to a charity. The Andruzzi Foundation is the charity we chose. They have a live auction to raise money and the proceeds to use towards cancer research, which is dear many hearts in the group.

But I also wanted to thank all you that read my posts and have encouraged me along the way. So I would like to give a similar charm to a few lucky readers as a token of my appreciation.

artistic exploration and relaxation

Just home from a wonderful weekend by the lake – relaxation, artistic exploration and perfect weather. Starting off with the welcoming smile of a Debbie from Circle of Life Studio. As I drove in, before I even got out of the car, I felt the warmth of a invited kindred spirit. I was lucky enough to spend the morning at her paper making workshop. I felt like a kid in the candy store flittering about in an artistic frenzy without care of space or time. I sure was busy, my handmade paper, shown above, proves it. Pure bliss.

Here is Debbie showing us how to release a perfect piece of pulp from the screen. Loved all the natural light coming through the studio windows. Her workshop was so informative (kinda wish I took notes), inviting and inspiring.

And here are a few of the dimensional handmade paper creations, I plan on using in some mixed media work in the near future. I picked up my dried, pressed paper on Sunday and she graciously showed me her Studio with beautiful pieces for sale. There is the Northwoods Gallery Tour Oct 2-4, I would highly recommend visiting some of the artists, especially Debbie(#23). I loved spending sometime in her shop chatting and it was great to see the grounds which are as inviting and creative as she is. Thank you!

I spent a bit of time finishing a few jewelry pieces and photographing some new pieces for my shop. Here is a sneak preview of one of them. I hope to find time to refresh the pieces online soon.

And one of my favorite things, spending time with my niece and spirited daughter, a little "Tween-Toddler" friendly artistic time of creating. They created hand-painted stationery card and envelope sets. Using acrylic paint and a scrape off technique. Didn't these turn out great!? Not sure if it will inspire any actual writing, rather than texting - but none-the-less it was great messy, creative fun. Hope your weekend was chock full of goodness.

neglected nuances

One of my many passions is gardening – nurturing the flowers, planning the beds, transplanting. Always mystified by the magic of one little seed to flourish. I'm not very fussy about it. I take it all in stride - a sensibility derived from my mother. But this no nonsense approach has been borderline neglect this year. I haven't had much time to spend weeding, watering or pruning. This past Saturday I shut down my life for awhile and spent over 4 hours weeding. My poor neglected garden has been overrun with the critters. As a result, I was graced with the image above. This sticker bush was about 6 feet tall with a trunk about an inch in diameter. But, I try to enjoy the moments for what they are, for a sticker bush, it's pretty beautiful.
If you noticed I enhanced it's beauty a bit by playing with the image in photoshop, (read on for more info and a link to a great tutorial) I must have a bit of green thumb despite my unknown efforts, as seen here.

I know my weeding is not really done, but at least it's manageable now.
And I can enjoy a few fruits of my ummm... labor? homemade sauce and pico de gallo. Both terrifically yummy. Fresh from my garden.
} As promised, a bit of info on the photo manipulation. I love the vintage flair that Susan Tuttle adds to her photos. True mastery. She has an online course that I'm dying to try called Visual Poetry - the name alone makes me swoon. But I did a bit of surfing and found a plethora of information on retro photoshop "filtery" - yes I'm making up words - at Smashing Magazine (LOVE this blog/resource)

whoa is me - of the computer variety

Sorry I have been so delinquent to my blog posting. I have a bit of bad news to report. My computer is out-of-order. The hard drive on my Mac fails to boot and I have lost a ton of pictures and work from January 2009 and maybe before. The lost of data upsets me more than the thought of buying a new computer. So everyone, take note make time to back up your information, because once it's gone (in the digital world) it's gone. So looking on the brighter side, I'll get to play with my new camera and reshoot all my jewelry for my etsy shop. My boss has graciously allowed me to use my work computer at home on occasion. So very grateful. And I guess I'll have to save my pennies and do my research. I believe there is a new computer in my future.

Wow, another wonderful show. Last weekend I took my show on the road to my weekend getaway place, Three Lakes WI. I normally go UpNorth to relax with family and do some quiet creating, but this time I decided to enter the Art on Main artshow. I'm so glad I did. Not only did I get to meet a bunch of wonderful people. They all seemed to love my creations, it was a wonderful day. But the icing on the cake was when I was presented a third place ribbon for my creations and space (conveniently shown backwards in the only photo I took, err). I also had the pleasure of meeting a few of the Northwoods Art Gypsies, the lovely Debra of Circle of Life Studio won first place, really inspired me with her birdhouses. And the watercolors of the second place winner (I need to research her info and will post it) were so full of life. I'm honored to be among these talented women. Thank you.

{ps - this post is a bit tardy. I'm currently mending my sick computer and posting when I can on what I can. Hopefully I'll get this fixed soon.

I'm awe struck. I'm showing my latest creations at the Art and Soul on the Fox Show this weekend. I was elated to receive a ribbon for my artistry, only 7 of the 70 artists received this recognition. After a very blustery, rainy day with a few challenges this was just the encouragement I needed. Thank you to all that weathered the storm and kept me company. Now what I really need is sleep, so I can be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

all about process

I must admit I’m all about the process rather than the finished product. Sometimes to a fault. so much in fact that I probably have no less than 20 projects in some state of incompletion right now. But once in a while I do finish - a deadline is a good thing for me. Even if I might still be late on the final product. A deadline was one of the reasons I started an ATC exchange with the CMP. This month’s theme was ingredients. I thought I’d share the process.
First, I’ll start with a bit of thanks to Sara, our fearless leader of the Collage Sisthars Collaborative and Mary Ann Moss from Dispatch from LA for showing me most of these techniques and fostering my passion for quick backgrounds and the fun of stencils and spray paint.
I started with watercolor paper and applied tube watercolor paint directly onto the paper. I used cadium yellow, yellow orche, a bit of sap green and some cobalt violet. Some of the paper already had a bit of color on it, and I just went right over it. Next with a credit card I scrap at the paint to cover the whole surface. As almost always I feel the need to have a bit of explanation on my ATCs - my thought for ingredients was Life and Lemons.

I had a few sketches for this idea. I enlarged the sketch to fit on the ATC (2.5 X 3.5). I cut out a few cards, or you can leave this step for last. Here’s the fun part, well fun if you like tedious cutting with an exacto.

I placed my copy on a stiff card stock the same size as the ATC and tacked it down with a glue stick. just enough so it wouldn’t slip as I was cutting. Using the sketch as a guide I cut around the lemons. Now with my little stencil ready I’m off to my makeshift spray booth (a box from the local grocery store) outside.

You’ll notice a few bubbles in my spray paint, it began drizzling as I was spraying, but I don’t mind the effect. I used yellow short cuts spray paint from Hobby Lobby - you could use more than one color or even another stencil if you like to create more depth.

I see now that some of my background worked better than other against the yellow lemon stencil. Now I cut down all the cards that weren’t cut to size. I went ahead and inked in the rest of the card using colored Sharpies and a white paint pen. Using a white, orange and green for the lighter cards and black for the darker ones.

Here are the finished cards. Hope you enjoy all you creative processes like I do, but it’s so fulfilling to finish, too.

got to embrace it, i'm old

as of tomorrow, I'm old. I usually find a renewed sense of energy around my birthday. I don't know why this year is different. Maybe I'm finally feeling it. Or maybe it's because I've been on crutches for the last week in a half, because I decided to have a little fun playing Volleyball with the neighbors. But then in my blog "soul" searching I found this link via ordinary courage through to the wonderful books of gratitude and beauty by Katherine Center. The only major thing different in this video (an excerpt from one of her books) is one year. otherwise it's perfect. a perfect answer, without even knowing, to my birthday wish. Reflection on what is important, more than the mirror. Thanks Katherine.

bronzclay - i'm smitten

I had the lovely opportunity to take a workshop with Celie Fago this weekend at the Bead and Button show in Milwaukee. Ring Relics in BronzClay. What a great class. Above is the final result. I happy with it for now, but I plan on refined the design and working a bit on a series in this style. It's a little different than what Celie demonstrated, after reviewing my sketchbook, I noticed I've been thinking about this for awhile.

I wasn't sure if I would like the new bronzclay. I've played with it a bit but really didn't sink my teeth into it's possibilities. Now with the knowledge of it's possibilities and limitations, I can see I'm really going to like working with this new medium. It feels more like clay and carves beautifully. Since the price is a bit more reasonable, I felt confident to try out my new design.
This is what I originally what I came up with. I didn't finish the piece because I didn't have enough flame power to do the little balls on the headpin. Then when I tried to take out my "temporary" stamen, I broke off the little flower on top. Hence the final piece, shown first has the collection of beads at the top.

Here's the other ring. It's reminiscent of something from whoville, don't you think?
If you are in the area, Raku Days at the Fine Line is this weekend. I will be playing around with the bronze clay and showing the attendees a few things I learned.

The show was great. It was hard to remind myself that I went with a budget in mind, but here is a few new finds I'll be incorporating into my work soon.

a prolific Saturday working with my many favorite mediums - paint, stencils, ink, PMC, thread. Oh yes I was all over today. Starting with an outstanding creative gathering with the Collage Sisthars. Follow with some lovely "alone time" in the workshop, working on samples for this week's class of "Want More PMC" at the Fine Line, to finishing my ATC for the CMP exchange- launch word - choices. As one of my fellow sisthars Linda said, as I was frolicking through the grass at the Fine Line after some crazy stencilry - "Cherylyn is sure happy today" --- and indeed it was hard to keep my excitement from pouring out. And as a topper, a bit of grilling, chatting with friends and a few drinks - what a lovely day.

local library loot

It's a rainy day, so Lauren and I decided to terrorize the local library. I'm sure they were glad to see us leave. A three-year is sure busy!
But as an added bonus, there was a book sale. I got all these Gems for $2.50. A series of Disney books (circa 1980 - they had newer ones, but these spoke to me), Wynken, Blyken and Nod (that I vaguely remember, but can't wait to read) a pop-up Rapuzel, a beautiful German book that I originally picked up for it's lovely orange cover and ornate spine, ended up with an added bonus - a hand embroidered bookmark tucked inside. Hmmm... I think we all could use a few more delicately appointed, personalized bookmarks, don't you? And the piece of resistance! Happy Origami books, bond by string with actual paper origami pieces tacked in through out, let alone the wonderful illustration of the mermaid, I could have just squealed. But at last, it was a library, so I just grinned from ear to ear instead. I hope your day or weekend is filled with unexpected charms.

short bursts

When I received this month's inspiration word "burst" from the Creative Mom Podcast ATC exchange, it was still cold and miserable here. But as always, my crocus' reminded me of the spring that will soon come. I took a picture and the very next day, it snowed. A heavy wet snow, making this burst of sunshine, whither and wilt. parallels, patterns, passions and prizes

I love parallels, connections, little nuances that weave through our everyday lives. Patterns that appear and reappear to nudge you as if to say, "yes, this way".
Sometimes I feel as if I'm a bit all over the place and it hasn't taken some time to be able to embrace the feeling as more than a "fault". But as I embrace all my passions, patterns start to emerge. I was reading the current HOW Magazine for my "day job" as a designer and I was pleased to realize I must be normal. The notion of the many outlets an artist needs to feed their passions. Collage, print making, painting and on my list PMC (precious metal clay). Projects to revive and recharge the creative spirit. There is also an article on stencilling (which I'm taking an online class with Dispatch From LA/ Pure Experimentation Stencilry starting this week. You should check it out. I'll be posting my experiments in the upcoming weeks. As I read in my Design Trade Magazine, I began an ah-ha moment. I'm not alone in my many passions and endeavors as I sometimes think. The best part of me are the pieces that happen to come together in my creations. I highly recommend picking up the current Creativity Issue of HOW Magazine – if your an artist, designer or anyone that could use a bit of creative recharge.

RELIQUARY...

Over the weekend I had the honor to be in a class taught by Leslie Altman. What a great class with very inspiring peers (most from the Collage Sisthars) Honestly, we were all very diligently working. That's the quietest I ever seen the group. I'm sure this weekend's meeting will be anything but. True to form, I had to be a bit difficult and instead of working on the one 8.5X11 canvas, I came armed with two 6X6 canvases I had. I really like the result. As you can see I'm not quite finished, but I wanted to post it before the newness went away. Hopefully I'll finish it soon. I believe the final quote will say "Where courageous thoughts (or ideas) come from. Well, I'm sure it will be right at home with my other unfinished projects. I'm still working on too many projects to count, but I'm loving any time I can spend in my studio.
